Her Story
What happens when a classically trained singer, a stand-up comedy enthusiast, and an NIH-funded neuroscience researcher walk into a room?
You get Dr. Mary Catherine George— and honestly, she wouldn't have it any other way.
The Scientist
For more than two decades, Dr. George has been asking one relentless question: what is it actually like to be the patient?
As a health psychologist and Director of Clinical Research at a major academic medical school in New York City, she has worked at the heart of some of medicine's most urgent challenges. She helped run the earliest HIV clinical trials out of Greenwich Village. She co-led a landmark NIH study searching for better treatments for chronic pain. With more than 32 peer-reviewed publications to her name, she has built a career on listening to the people most often left out of the research conversation.
Today she's building virtual reality tools for chronic nerve pain and using artificial intelligence to help people describe what hurts — because sometimes the most radical thing you can do in medicine is actually listen.
The Performer
But here's the thing about Dr. MC: she has never been just one thing.
Long before the lab coat, there was the stage. As a founding member of the improvisational opera troupe Play It by Ear, she toured the country performing musical pieces invented entirely in the moment from a single audience suggestion. You can still hear her voice on Spotify in Gershon Kingsley's Voices from the Shadows.
And yes — she's been known to show up at the Gotham Comedy Club. Unannounced.
Why Healthy by George
That same fearless, joyful, endlessly curious spirit lives at the heart of Healthy by George — her weekly YouTube show where neuroscience meets real life, and where aging intentionally becomes not a chore, but an adventure.
Each episode is an invitation: stay curious, keep learning, and embrace the glorious, surprising, completely unpredictable experience of growing older — with love, humor, and a whole lot of purpose.
Co-piloting it all from his favorite spot on the rug: Pete, her shih tzu, daily walking partner, and the household's self-appointed chief of mood.
We have one precious life.
MC is absolutely delighted you're here for it.
